Cherrapunjee, a nature lover’s paradise, is a small town located on the
southern edge of Khasi Hills (
25.30°N 91.70°E
) at an altitude of about 4,823 feet (1,484 m) above
mean sea level. It falls in the East Khasi Hills District of the Indian State
of Meghalaya (one of the seven states in North East India with Assam to its
North and sharing an international border with Bangladesh to its South).
It is credited as
being the second wettest place on Earth. However, nearby Mawsynram
currently holds that record. Though, it still holds the world record for the
most rainfall in a calendar month and in a year.
Valleys around Cherrapunji, however, are covered with lush and very
diverse vegetation, containing numerous endemic species of plants,
including Meghalaya subtropical forests.
